A psychological practice working with adults

What to expect when seeing a psychologist

Counselling and psychotherapy can assist in identifying and overcoming unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour which impact on your ability to understand yourself and how you experience interactions and relationships with others.

In addition, counselling and psychotherapy can enable you to fulfil your emotional potential and wellbeing. It can help you to live according to your core inner values, gain clarity about your life, communicate with confidence and behave with integrity when facing life’s many challenges and opportunities.

Registered psychologists are bound by strict codes of ethical practice, which means:

  • they will treat you with respect.

  • they will provide a clear explanation of the services you will receive.

  • they will give you an explanation about the nature and limits of confidentiality surrounding the service they provide to you.

  • they will provide competent and professional service to you.

  • they will provide a clear statement about fees.

  • your personal information will be bound by the legal requirements of the National Privacy Principles.

Medicare and private health funds

Since 1 November 2006, the Australian Government has provided Medicare items for psychological treatment by registered psychologists. In order to receive a Medicare rebate you are required to have a referral from your General Practitioner. If eligible you can generally receive up to 10 individual services in a calendar year. From 1 July 2023, the Medicare rebate will be $93.35 for a session lasting 50+ minutes.

Some private health funds will rebate a set amount per year, for psychological services. It is recommended you check with your private health provider if applicable.
